Radical New York poets, The Last Poets, are considered to be the godfathers of rap. Original members were Felipe Luciano, David Nelson and Gylan Kain who formed the group in Marcus Garvey Park on 19 May 1968, the birth date of Malcolm X. Later incarnations of the group featured Jalal Nuriddin, Umar Bin Hassan, Abu Mustapha, Abiodun Oyewale, and the late Sulieman El Hadi. Poets and activists, The Last Poets have for 40 years been using the power of their words to document and galvanise the awakening of a black political consciousness in the US.
